SHAKER

The SHAKER movement can trace its origins to England in the eighteenth century, but the SHAKER style of furniture is more often associated with the American SHAKER communities of the nineteenth century. SHAKER interiors are characterised by a certain austerity and simplicity. SHAKER furniture was designed with great care, but importantly also with purpose. Functionality was the driving principle and so there was the minimum of elaborate detail and extra decoration. Typically, a SHAKER kitchen will feature straight edges and inset panels. In recent years, the style has become immensely popular and very fashionable. The finish is normally painted or left in a natural wood finish like maple, and it is a look that is perhaps more suited to a traditional, more rustic property, than a modern one.
